Learning about Stacey

IMG_5478

It was great to spend some time hanging out at the Stacey surfboard factory, which is part of a mega surfboard supplier the Glass Lab! I was lucky to get in close on the action, observing Lee designing the computer shapes and then slugging it out in the shaping bay.

IMG_5457

There were lots of highlights around the Glass Lab, this was my favorite, the mess made from painting surfboards!

This is in the glassing bay, masking tape is used in the process of applying each layer of fibre glass to the board. The Tape is the wrapped around the stand that the board leans on, to create a forgiving surface. So these layers of tape contain the process history of many surfboards being made. Thanks for having me LEE STACEY ya guru

RALPH RIDDEL SURFBOARDS: looking in a cafe/surfboard shop in Coolangatta, I came across one of these crazy surfboard like objects. Rocking up to the Lee Stacey factory, I was pretty excited to cross paths with Ralph making boards next door.

IMG_5330

Ralph has been making surfboards of various varieties for over 30 years, it is exciting to see all this knowledge funneled into a creative shaping project. These fish like objects are made in an organic process, Ralph told me they start with out an end design in mind. Whilst shaping he lets the character of the foam grow, and follows it to build its form.

IMG_4588

Sun House was a great surfboard and hardware shop/cafe/creative space, what made the experience quite unique was a chook from down the road inviting itself in and pecking about in and around the surfboards. The coffee was good too!

IMG_4581

there were some great historic boards, colorful glass jobs and all sorts. Including a retrospective comic book on Captain Good Vibes, My life as a Pork Chop by Tony Edwards. This Cook was reading out the dimensions of the board I liked.

As I was passing through Brisbane there was an opportunity to have a show at Witch Meat, a small Artist Run Space in the center of a share house in the West End. The premise of the show was to do an everything out of the van. We built a make shift slippery dip from the side door of the van into the front yard. I unloaded various objects onto the slide, it made a pile on the front lawn, I invited people to take them inside to the gallery.

staying in Stella Johnson’s paradise. Well one night i was meant to be staying here in the 13th floor at Johnos apartment. We went out for dinner and followed with a few drinks. Johno headed home and I stayed out a bit longer only to realize, i had no cash left, flat phone and had mis placed my van key. I walked the ten km, back and did not want to wake up the apartment. I had no key to my van. Near my van found a phone box a some spare change. I the called RAQV and they let me into my van in the carpark of the fancy apartments for a good rest. The next day we went out to South Stradbroke Island on Johnos jet ski and scored some fun Waves.
